Background
Dead or Alive is a fighting-game series developed by Team Ninja. My work on Dead or Alive 5 spanned several years and included promotional video production, contributions to the official guidebook, and the Fighters' Destiny documentary series. These projects brought together video production, motion graphics, visual effects, and graphic design.
Dead or Alive 5 Official Guidebook
As a contractor through Random House Publishing, I worked with author Bryan Dawson on the official Dead or Alive 5 guidebook — contributing frame data and assisting with the character layout of the guide.
Ahead of the game's launch, Tom Lee, Creative Director of Team Ninja, asked me how I'd market Dead or Alive to people who don't play fighting games. Using the game's existing “I'm a Fighter” tagline as the creative starting point, I developed a promotional video built around the fighting spirit in everyone: a montage of iconic sporting moments and the motivation, skill, and determination it takes to achieve greatness. A conceptual piece made to speak to a broad audience rather than existing fans. My other video-production work around Dead or Alive 5 included a series of character-specific combo and match exhibition videos featured during the E3 “I'm a Fighter” event. That body of work was followed in 2015 by the Fighters' Destiny documentary series.
Press: Featured by IGN in “DOA5: I'm a Fighter — Silent Legend” (2012).
Fighters' Destiny — Documentary Series
A four-part documentary series exploring the Dead or Alive fighting-game community, produced with Bryan Dawson and hosted on Team Ninja's official YouTube channel. I handled field and post-production, including filming, interviews, b-roll, editing, color grading, and the full motion-graphics package — opening titles, lower and upper thirds, transitions, and end credits. The series includes interviews with sWooZie (Adande Thorne) and Tom Lee, Team Ninja's Creative Director at the time.
Motion Graphics & Visual Effects
The documentary's visual language was built from the ground up: an animated intro sequence, broadcast-style lower and upper thirds, title treatments, transitions, and animated credits. I also upscaled, rescored, and re-edited a vintage Dead or Alive 2 trailer for use within the series.
